Frequently Asked Questions of the Foreign Students and Staff who Wish to Come to the University of Belgrade

Students of the University of Belgrade may participate in the following exchange programs: Erasmus+ mobility program, bilateral exchange, CEEPUS, free mover exchange.

The European Union's Erasmus+ program is a funding scheme to support activities in the fields of Education, Training, Youth and Sport. The exchange is implemented within the fields of education and training, through cooperation with EU partner countries, third countries associated to the program (formerly known as “program countries”), i.e. universities within KA131 and third countries not associated to the program (formerly known as “partner countries), universities within KA171, by supporting the mobility of individual participants enrolled or employed at a higher education institution (HEI), namely:
- Student mobility for studies
- Student mobility for traineeships
- Staff mobility for teaching
- Staff mobility for training

Starting 2021, UK is no longer a program, but a partner country (KA171) in the Erasmus+ program and special rules apply for mobility in UK (see further mobion.bg.ac.rs).

The mobility of an exchange student, who stays at a host institution for a study period, during which s/he can carry out activities awarding academic credits, which are then recognized by the home institution is supported by UB as mobility. Upon successfully completing their mobility period abroad, the students continue as candidates for the degree of their home/ sending institution.
According to Erasmus+ program, student mobility can last anywhere from 2 months, to 12 months within one cycle of studies. The 2021-27 Erasmus+ program period brings additional changes to duration of mobility. Please visit mobion.bg.ac.rs for more information.

Degree seeking - Degree seeking students are individuals who have entered a HE institution (abroad) in order to receive a degree of that institution.

Free mover - A student participating in credit mobility outside an organized student mobility program (for example Erasmus+). A free mover chooses a host institution and organizes his/her credit mobility at that institution. The student needs a nomination letter and a relevant Learning Agreement signed by the home and host institutions, as well as other accompanying documents, in order to have the mobility period recognized by the home institution.

The University of Belgrade has created an online software platform "MobiOn" in order to facilitate the application procedure for Erasmus+ KA1 candidates. The potential applicants must use this platform in order to apply for exchange and should note that those applications received or sent in any way other than through "MobiOn" will not be accepted. The "MobiOn" platform requires you to register in order to be able to access the application form and submit the requested documents. We use the information you will provide via our service to rank you as a participant in mobility programs announced on “MobiOn” platform, as defined by the privacy policy. You do not need to finish the application at one sitting; rather, you will be able to access your application frequently before you finally submit it for our review and ranking. Once your application has successfully been submitted, you will receive a confirmation and the number your application has been submitted under. Please keep this number, as you may need it for future reference.

A formalized agreement of the three parties involved in mobility – the student, the sending institution and the receiving institution – to facilitate the implementation of mobility and its recognition. The agreement is to be signed by the student and the sending institution before and the host institution one month after the start of the mobility period, at the latest, and it is intended to give the student the confirmation that the credits he/she successfully achieves during the mobility period will be recognized.

The content of the LA may be changed during the mobility, subject to availability of courses and with formal approval (signature) of the three parties mentioned in Q5. Changes to the original LA need to be finalized one month after the start of the mobility period at the latest.

You can change the dates indicated in your LA during the time of the application, in accordance with the instructions received from the host institution (i.e. when the host sends the exact dates of the mobility program). If you are applying for Erasmus+ mobility, you will be required to also modify the dates in your user account on the MobiON platform (mobion.bg.ac.rs).

An up-to-date record of the students’ progress in their studies: the educational components they have taken, the number of ECTS credits they have achieved, and the grades they have been awarded. It is a vital document for recording progress and for recognizing learning achievements during student mobility.

The minimum recommended language of instruction level is B1 for students and B2 for staff, as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. This may vary based on the requirements of the study program, which will be seen in the application form. We suggest that you upload a language certificate as one of the required application documents.

As an academic exchange visitor, you will need to obtain your authorization of temporary stay (residence permit) for legal stay in the Republic of Serbia during your mobility / exchange. For all stays of 90 days or more, the authorization of temporary stay is mandatory. By visiting the website of the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Serbia: http://mup.gov.rs/wps/portal/en/information you can find the general list of required documents, as well as specific documents required for obtaining the authorization of temporary stay for academic purposes.

Visitors can rent their own accommodation (for approximate prices, please see “Costs of Living” section of at: https://bg.ac.rs/en/study-in-belgrade/living-in-belgrade.php). The University of Belgrade does not mediate in renting private accommodation, but there are numerous online resources for finding accommodation. Please note that all costs listed in this document are estimates only and are intended to help students plan their financial resources. Actual expenditures can significantly vary depending on individual spending habits, and, of course, whether one plans to live alone or with flat mates. We estimate that students need an average of €450-600 per month per person to cover their accommodation costs, costs of utilities, meals, city transportation, some necessary personal expenses and incidentals.

The minimum number of ECTS credits that one must agree upon in their LA is 19 ECTS per semester (which is the official Erasmus+ program requirement). However, this requirement may vary depending on your host institution and may be up to 30 ECTS per semester. Please check the fact sheet provided within a specific application announcement for information on the minimum ECTS requirement of your host university or contact your ECTS coordinator/ IRO office for more information

Please refer to your home institution’s outgoing mobility coordinator for information regarding the minimum ECTS credits requirement. Please note that you may not take just one single course during your stay on mobility in Belgrade.

Insurance is compulsory during mobility period abroad for both staff and students (incoming or outgoing).

Tuition fees are waived according to Erasmus+ program rules. Additionally, bilateral exchange agreements are signed under the requirement that tuition fee will be waived. Some bilateral exchange agreements may offer accommodation free of charge, based on reciprocity. Please contact the relevant international mobility coordinator for further information.

Incoming students and staff may apply for training mobility at the University of Belgrade without an Inter-Institutional Agreement of Cooperation signed between the candidate’s home institution and UB. The approval of this type of mobility is subject to availability of the hosting institution (UB itself or any of its members) to accommodate a particular request at any given time. We therefore kindly ask you to contact the University of Belgrade well in advance of your planned training mobility program.

In order to take part in a mobility or an exchange program offered by the University of Belgrade, a student must submit a proof of enrollment into a study program (all levels of study) organized by the University.
Outgoing undergraduate students must have completed at least one year of study of their UG study program before they can even apply for mobility/exchange.
According to the same policy, incoming undergraduate students must have completed at least one year of study of their UG study program before they can apply for mobility/exchange. This requirement may be even higher at some foreign universities, so please also refer to your home university for additional confirmation of this requirement.

OUTGOING STUDENTS: With respect to the still-ongoing pandemic of the coronavirus, we kindly ask all outgoing candidates of the University of Belgrade to immediately inform the Erasmus+ Team of the University of Belgrade of any changes, delays or cancellations of their planned mobility abroad, so that we may take the necessary steps to ensure the smooth implementation of the Erasmus+ mobility program at our institution.
