The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine University of Belgrade is situated near the Belgrade city center, in Bulevar oslobodjenja 18 street, located a few hundred meters away from the Slavija square in the direction towards Autokomanda. The Faculty is located in the vicinity of the Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry.
Although the idea of the foundation of The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine originates from the beginning of the 20th century, the institution was established in 1936 under the name “Veterinary Faculty of the Belgrade University” according to the official decision of the Ministry of Education no. 30281/36. The first professors to take part in teaching at the Faculty were elected on August 19th, 1936, by the Belgrade University Senate and were mostly personnel from the Faculties of Medicine and Agriculture. Prof. dr Živojin Djordjević was the first Dean of the Faculty, and this first year was marked by openings for various necessary positions for Full Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors, and Teaching Assistants. Many eminent persons such as Dr. Ilija Djuričić, Dr. Antonije Vuković, Dr. Čedomir Simić, Dr. Jovan Dimić, and Dr. Vladeta Simić were the first ones to be elected to the Collegium of Faculty Professors. In 1936, the first class of 149 students enrolled the Faculty, and teaching activities were performed at the premises of the Faculty of Medicine.
From its foundation in 1936 to date, 9,302 veterinarians graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, including 1,404 veterinary specialists of various study areas, 453 Masters of Science, and 773 Doctors of Veterinary Sciences. At present, more than 1,400 students are enrolled in various forms of studies at the Faculty.
The main activity of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine consists of the pedagogical work with students enrolled in Integrated Academic Studies of Veterinary Medicine, and Postgraduate Studies including Ph.D. and Specialist Academic Studies. Moreover, notable activities of the Faculty include scientific and professional work. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine regularly organizes congresses, seminars, and various forms of continuing education, thus promoting the constant acquisition of knowledge and skills for Doctors of Veterinary Medicine in our country. All mentioned activities are realized by 106 members of the teaching staff (Assistant professors, Associate Professors, and Full Professors), 23 Teaching Assistants, one foreign language professor, and many expert associates, laboratory technicians, and technical staff members employed at various Faculty Departments and Clinics. Additionally, the Faculty has special organizational units such as the Center for Development and International Cooperation, Center for Publishing, Center for Quality Assurance and Improvement, Information and Communication Center, and Center for Innovation and Scientific Research. Some activities at the Faculty are also conducted by postgraduate students, young researchers employed on scientific projects financed by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technological Development, as well as interns.
The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is a member of the European Association of Establishments of Veterinary Education (EAEVE) and is therefore obliged to harmonize the educational process with European standards, which is a prerequisite for accepting diplomas issued by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine University of Belgrade in all European countries. For achieving exceptional results in the field of education and science, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is the winner of the Saint Sava Award for 2020, awarded by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia.
