Although the idea of the foundation of The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine originates from the beginning of the 20th century, the institution was established in 1936 under the name “Veterinary Faculty of the Belgrade University” according to the official decision of the Ministry of Education no. 30281/36. The first professors to take part in teaching at the Faculty were elected on August 19th, 1936, by the Belgrade University Senate and were mostly personnel from the Faculties of Medicine and Agriculture. Prof. dr Živojin Djordjević was the first Dean of the Faculty, and this first year was marked by openings for various necessary positions for Full Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors, and Teaching Assistants. Many eminent persons such as Dr. Ilija Djuričić, Dr. Antonije Vuković, Dr. Čedomir Simić, Dr. Jovan Dimić, and Dr. Vladeta Simić were the first ones to be elected to the Collegium of Faculty Professors. In 1936, the first class of 149 students enrolled the Faculty, and teaching activities were performed at the premises of the Faculty of Medicine.

From its foundation in 1936 to date, 9,302 veterinarians graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, including 1,404 veterinary specialists of various study areas, 453 Masters of Science, and 773 Doctors of Veterinary Sciences. At present, more than 1,400 students are enrolled in various forms of studies at the Faculty.
